The 1st Regiment New Mexico Infantry was organized at Fort Union and Santa Fe, New Mexico on July 1, 1861 – August 13, 1861. The regimental colonel of the 1st New Mexico Regiment was Colonel Kit Carson. The regiment was involved in action at the Battle of Valverde against Confederate soldiers from February 20-21, 1862. This battle was the first major engagement of the Civil War in the far West and produced heavy causalities but no decisive results.

Juan and Maria Andrella had 13 children. Juan died on September 10, 1910 and is buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery in Vallecitos, New Mexico.
